Moving with family to Tianjin…any good resources to read about this city and life there for expat families?

Matt May 16, 2011 at 3:30 PM

I don’t know enough about Tianjin to help you out a whole lot. Tianjin is not far from Beijing and I think that most expat amenities that are in Beijing are also available in Tianjin, but not all. Cost of living is probably cheaper but there won’t be as large of an expat community. There are expats in Tianjin though so do your best to connect with them through the international church or the international school once you arrive.

Jamie, my husband and I live in Tianjin. We’ve been here almost a year. We like it a lot. A website I visited quite a bit before moving here (and still some now) is http://tianjinexpats.com/
Hope it’s helpful for you. Hope your transition to TJ is great!

What a fantastic resource you’ve created! Will look forward to visiting your coffee house. My company will be relocating me to Beijing in the near future. My question concerns mattresses and bedding, which I’m abit fussy about. Is there a place in Beijing to buy western-style mattresses (like Sealy or Serta) and all-cotton sheets? Or should I ship those from the US? Thanks!

It is possible to find a nice mattress in Beijing. We actually have a very nice one (provided by the landlord), but ours is the exception. Most Chinese mattresses are hard as a board. If your company is giving you a shipment then it might be worth bringing your mattress. I’d bring your own sheets, I’m sure there are all-cotton sheets, but they might be hard to find or might be really expensive.

The rule of thumb in Beijing right now is that you can find just about anything, if you’re willing to pay for it.
