How to keep your bike safe

by Matt on August 20, 2010

Bike thievery is not as much of a problem over here on the east side or Beijing as it is in other parts of the city, but the truth is if there are bikes there are bike thieves. Especially if you decide to buy a nicer bike it’s important to take measures to keep it safe. Also new bikes are the most likely to be targeted. Check out the post today over at Chengdu Living titled 5 Steps to Prevent Your Bike From Being Stolen for some good common sense tips.

but you know, you’ve not really lived in China until you’ve had at least 3 or 4 stolen…

It’s kind of funny to see that people tend not to lock bikes to posts or fences or even dedicated bike racks, even if they’re parked next to them. Of course, if you see someone pick up a wheel-locked bike and put in in the back of a truck, you might not continue that behaviour.

It makes me wonder where all those bikes go. Because as Rich said, it happens to almost everyone and probably several times. Who knows, your stolen bike could be sold for scrap that is melted down and sold to a manufactor who uses the metal to make the chain that you will buy to lock your next bike up with.
