Why join the Middle Kingdom Coffee Club?
Enjoy the Great Coffees of the World
We get our coffee from Rickshaw Roasters, which is a small boutique roaster run by a couple of guys from New Zealand. Coffee grown in different parts of world have distinct tastes. With the MK Coffee Club you get to try out a variety of great coffees from all over the planet. Every delivery is a different single origin coffee or specially designed blend. One week it might be a Sumatran Mandehling and two weeks later you'll get a Colombian Supremo.
Learn to be a Coffee Snob
One of the great things about being part of a coffee club is that it helps you learn more about the coffee you're drinking. Every time the MK Coffee Club delivers coffee, Matt (me) will post an article on the Middle Kingdom Blog about where the coffee is from, how it's processed and roasted and tips on what flavors to look for when you drink it.
Get the Best Deal in the City
A bag of coffee at Starbucks costs ¥85-115 per bag and usually it's a month or two old. Rickshaw Roasters roasts the coffee for us within 2 to 4 days of delivery and it is delivered right to your door. At ¥62 a bag that's by far the best deal in Beijing on coffee.
Frequently Asked Questions
How can I pay for the coffee?
There are two ways to pay. 1) Through Paypal in USD or 2) cash on delivery in RMB. If you're paying in cash please pay for the full month on the first delivery.
How do I un-join the coffee club?
You can leave the club any time you'd like, just let us know before the 1st of the month so we can cancel your order.
Can I get the same coffee every week or do I have to try the different kinds?
Yes, but you'll miss out on so much fun. If you'd rather get the same coffee every time we recommend you get the Rickshaw #1 House Blend.
Can I order extra coffee?
Yes, just let us know how much you need and we can deliver extra bags at ¥62 a bag.
Can I get coffee delivered every week instead of every two weeks?
Right now we can only handle delivery twice a month.

Hi There, I am interested in joining the coffee club but my Espresso machine wont be in China for a couple of months, can you please tell me how big a bag is ie 1kg?

Hi,
I will be arriving in Beijing in two weeks for studying abroad, and I found this blog. I have been wondering what I would do about coffee (my program told me that they would provide instant coffee-yuck!) and am very interested in joining the coffee club.
I am currently planning on bringing my french press along with a bag or two of coffee, but not enough to last.
I have two questions: One, is this coffee coarse enough for use with a french press? and two: I am hoping to purchase a cheap (but decent) drip coffee maker when I arrive in Beijing. How difficult will it be to find a coffee maker like that in the city, and how much will that cost me?
Hi Matt,
Just wondering if the coffee is grind or still in form of beans? For someone who does not have a coffee grinder having coffee beans delivered at your door is a bit of a tease.

Niina,
I can deliver it to you ground for french press or drip coffee.
Kara,
You can buy drip coffee makers, but they aren’t super common (because most of the available coffee is instant). I don’t know how much they go for right now, but next time I’m at the mall I’ll take a look and try to get back to you.

Looking forward to joining the Coffee Club soon once we have a permanent address in Beijing. Locally-roasted coffee (ground to spec) twice a month? Fantastic!
Will you deliver to the Haidian area? Or is that too far from 798?
It depends a little bit on what part of HaiDian (far west, or far south might be a bit tough), but we do some deliveries there.
Hi Matt:
Sorry to hear about Aizai Cafe – though it sounds like you are OK with where things netted out. I visited back in January and had your famous Mocha and it was delicious, as was the food. I’ve been meaning to email you about the coffee club so this months post was a good reminder. We just moved to Beijing 2 months ago and have been hard pressed to find good whole bean coffee that doesn’t cost you an arm and a leg. I did finally find a grinder at Dong Jiao market thanks to someones reco
So will you deliver to Shunyi? And assume you can deliver whole bean given I now have said grinder. Thank you! Ingrid
