Chinese Drivers License Guide

Are you crazy?
If you have spent any time in Beijing you may believe that you would have to be crazy to want to take to these roads in a vehicle. Nonetheless more and more expats living in Beijing and other parts of China are taking the plunge. This guide is a step-by-step walk through of the whole process and over one hundred people have used it to go through the process of getting their drivers license in Beijing. It is based upon my personal experience getting my driver’s license in Beijing in the summer of 2010, so if you live in other cities in China or if you are reading this significantly later than 2010 it may or may not be helpful.

Included in the guide is the following:

  • Checklist of documents needed
  • Map to the Motor Vehicle Administration
  • Study tips for the test
  • Traffic cop hand signal chart
  • Funny questions from the test
  • All the forms needed for your application (Translation form, medical exam form, driver’s application form)

The website chinesedrivingtest.com referred to in your e-guide is dead!

Thanks for letting us know. I wouldn’t really recommend using that site anyways, but I’ll get it updated for future versions of the guide.

I found the “rules site” after I had failed the first time (I just hate to memorize stuff). It actually makes some of the questions a bit more easy to remember, then there are the questions that have no logic no matter what.

Maybe you could include this to your guide?

I did a PDF of the rules but maybe it is better to link to source instead of static text.

Nice write up, the tips and the hand signals were particularly helpful. My write up here :

Just so you know… My firm first published China Drive, an iPhone app (http://goo.gl/OcMPD) that helps people study for the written Chinese language, last April… we’re making minor changes now and an Android version is forthcoming…

Hello David,
I just downloaded your app on my iPad and it did not work, but it says for iPhones and iPad… Any assistance please?
Best wishes

I should like to bring your attention to this little web app I have put together:

http://www.chinese-driving-test.com

It has practice tests, a quiz, a revision tool for each section of the test, and it is 100% free!

Nick,
That website looks great. Thanks for sharing it.

Hi Matt,

I just downloaded the guide and its very concise and helpful. I have one question, what is the difference between Z-visa and residence permit? I thought a Z-visa is a residence permit? When you say residence permit in the guide do you mean the form from the police department for registration of temporary residence?

Matt November 15, 2011 at 10:32 AM

Scott,
The residence permit is the small card that you get from the police station. The Z-visa is a work visa in your passport. I don’t think people with student visas or tourist visas are able to get a driver’s license.
